Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaAtzma’ut

|

Dear Friends,

This week people around the world celebrated Yom HaZikaron, or Israeli Memorial Day, and Yom HaAtzma’ut, or Israel Independence day. In honor of both occasions, and in the spirit of each, the JCC is proud to host several important events over the next few weeks.

  • Sunday, May 8, join us to celebrate the occasion of Israel’s 74th Independence Day. The event will include Israeli dancing, music, fun activities for the entire family, and much more. This program is proudly supported by the Israel Engagement Fund: A JCC Association of North America Program Accelerator.
  • On Wednesday, June 1, the JCC will open Hadar Goldin – The Final Peace, a moving exhibit of artwork by military hero, Hadar Goldin, an IDF soldier and US citizen killed by Hamas during Operation Protective Edge. Hadar was a talented artist and writer, and his work has been presented to the United Nations and shown through traveling exhibits around the world.
  • On Tuesday, June 14, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s Jewish Community Relations Council present, “Israel and Jewish Life on Campus: The Latest Trends with Noam Weissman and Gabe Greenberg.” This workshop will give students tips on how to create engaged and meaningful dialogue about Israel and being Jewish on campus, inside and outside classes long before they get there. It will also introduce parents to the challenges students face today.
  • Finally, on Wednesday, June 15, Theatre Ariel will present, “Songbirds and Pomegranates.” Texts and music curated by Deborah Baer Mozes and Jesse Bernstein. Theatre Ariel reflects on the life, artwork and legacy of Hadar Goldin through a dynamic reading of poetry, theatre and contemporary Israeli folk and pop music.

As a Jewish Community Center, we are inspired to present this multiplicity of perspectives, media, and opportunities for engagement with partners from across the community. We look forward to sharing this diversity of Jewish stories with you!

Shabbat Shalom,
Alan
