Dear Friends,
Gems at the J is starting off 2026 with a a new season of programs designed for older adults, with adults of all ages welcome to participate. This season offers opportunities to learn, create, connect, and give back, both at the J and out in the community.
Here are just some highlights from the upcoming season:
Monthly Winter Zentangle (Beginning January 20)
Join Mindy Shapiro for a monthly series focused on mindful meditation through doodling. Each session features a unique theme, offering a relaxing and creative way to unwind while learning new Zentangle® techniques.
Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof: American Jews and Social Justice (January 22 – February 5)
Led by Dr. Reena Sigman Friedman, this class explores the prominent role American Jews have played in social justice movements. Through memoirs, speeches, and historical records, participants will examine the work of rabbis, political leaders, labor organizers, and other activists who advocated for the rights of disadvantaged communities.
Volunteer Cooking at JFCS (February 25)
This hands-on volunteer experience brings GEMS participants together in the JFCS teaching kitchen to help prepare meals for community members facing food insecurity. No cooking experience is needed, just a willingness to participate and make an impact.
Philadelphia Flower Show Trip (March 4)
Travel with us to the 2026 Philadelphia Flower Show, Rooted: Origins of American Gardening. Enjoy immersive garden exhibits and stunning floral displays that highlight the personal stories and cultural traditions that shape how we grow and gather. Transportation is available, with a reduced price option for those who prefer to meet us at the show.
NYC Trip – The Great Gatsby on Broadway (April 30)
Join us for a full-day trip to New York City to experience the Tony Award–winning musical The Great Gatsby on Broadway. This jazz-infused adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel brings the glamour of the Roaring Twenties to life. The price includes round-trip transportation, orchestra seats, and gratuities. Lunch is on your own, perfect for enjoying a favorite spot in the theater district. Please register by April 9.
