SUMMARY:Gems at the J | Drawing Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!! When we were children\, almost all of us had the experience of drawing and making art; but frequently we may have received the message that only a few privileged people had “the gift”\, “the talent”\, “the special skill” to produce “real Art”…so many people gave up and stopped drawing altogether. No matter what your skill-level\, your past experience (or lack of experience)\, or your age\, my goal is always the same…to have you succeed with your creativity and imagination\, to learn to SEE after many-lookings\, and to have fun doing it. So let’s open that door\, and let’s have some fun doing it! \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Gems at the J | When Life Changes: Understanding Grief and Building Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Molly Grace Hicks\, MMT\, MT-BC\, FT is a Board-Certified Music Therapist and Fellow in Thanatology. Molly is the founder of a private music therapy practice\, Connected Voice Creative Healing\, supporting people who are experiencing grief and loss\, life transitions\, and spiritual struggles. Previously\, Molly worked in hospice care from 2008 to 2024. Molly also enjoys songwriting\, creating mixed media art\, and engaging in interfaith community work. \n  \nDates & Workshop Descriptions: \nWednesday\, February 18; 2-3:30 p.m.\nWorkshop 1: Grief and Loss: Understanding the Ongoing Process \nThis workshop will explore the basics of grief and loss\, offering ways to understand the process\, recognize the many possible grief responses across all domains of life\, and learn resources for coping. There are many modern frameworks for learning about grief\, and most do not present a set series of stages followed in a particular order. However\, there are some misconceptions about grief that are culturally perpetuated and may do harm if not contextualized. This workshop will give attendees a basic vocabulary for thinking and dialoguing about grief\, emphasizing its non-linear nature\, the importance of self-compassion\, and the necessity of support. One goal is for each attendee to leave with a way of conceiving of the grief process that feels accessible and relevant to their lives. \n  \nTuesday\, March 10; 2-3:30 p.m.\nWorkshop 2: Going Through Changes: Non-Death Grief and Loss \nGrief arises as we experience various life milestones\, changes in health and ability\, and social relationships\, to name a few. Attendees will learn about non-death losses that may be well-defined\, ambiguous or a little of each\, and will leave with a framework for resilience that may be helpful in coping. \n  \nTuesday\, April 21\, 2-3:30 p.m.\nWorkshop 3: Moving Through\, Not Getting Over: Death-Related Grief and Loss \nThis workshop will focus on some of the common experiences connected to the dying and/or death of a person in our lives. Attendees will learn more about the natural process of grief\, integrating grief into one’s life\, and how to recommend support or seek it for oneself when acute grief may be complicated or prolonged. \nClick here to register!\nTo register for individual dates\, email rsakofs@phillyjcc.com \n  \nThis workshop series is in partnership with:

SUMMARY:Gems at the J | The Establishment of the Colonies in British North America
DESCRIPTION:Myths\, legends and lore have become a significant part of the story of the American Revolution. Often beginning with a kernel of truth\, they are repeated and embellished until they have become a part of history. To explain these inaccuracies\, we open the vaults of history to find the true story. \nBritish colonists began arriving in North America in the early 17th century. This class examines the social and political landscape of 17th and 18th century America. Beginning with the formation of the colonies through the beginning of the struggle for independence\, we discuss American beliefs and society bringing into sharp focus the causes of the American Revolution and the political and social actions that lead to “the shot heard round the world.” \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Gems at the J | Political Affairs
DESCRIPTION:With Bill Rosenberg \nJoin us for another informative round of Political Affairs with Dr. Bill Rosenberg.\nApril 23\, 2026 Mayor Mamdani and Rank Order Voting.\nInstead of selecting a single candidate\, a voter ranks multiple candidates in order of preference. If a candidate is selected as the first-choice candidate by more than 50% of voters\, they win. But if not\, the ranked choice process kicks in. This has important implications in elections involving multiple candidates. \nMay 7\, 2026 How Do Algorithms influence Our Media Feeds and Our Political Views.\nSocial Media outlets use algorithms to choose what appears in our social media feeds based on our likes and previous viewing. This then develops the basis of our view of the world. \nMay 28\, 2026 What Countries are in the Axis of Good and Evil In Politics Today? How Has this Changed Over Time?\nThe Axis powers often has referred to Germany\, Japan and Italy during WWII. Since then the terminology has shifted by our leaders to be a different set of governments today including Russia\, China\, Iran\, and North Korea. However\, countries other than the US have their own list of belligerents. \nJune 11\, 2026 US Immigration History and the Politics of 2026.\nThe US has had a complex relationship since our origins with immigration. At times the gates have been more open or closed to various groups\, often tied to politics\, economics and discrimination. \nClick here to register!
