Acclaimed documentary photographer Stephen Shames brings back images of children whose lives have been indelibly changed by civil war and AIDS. Many are now in school thanks to Shames' efforts.

Noted photojournalist Stephen Shames has won awards from Leica the
International
Center of Photography, the Kodak Crystal Eagle and more. Shames has created a foundation to help children affected by the war in Northern Uganda return to school.More information and images: www.stephenshames.org.

 

                                        

Dr. Elliot Fratkin Conflict in
Uganda: A Background
Dr. Fratkin is Director of African Studies, Smith College. He has taught as a Fulbright Scholar in Eritrea and was part of theWorld Bank Inspection Panel investigating complaints about the building of the Chad-Cameroon Oil Pipeline.

Dr. Joanne Corbin – Returning the Tears: Healing After War in
Northern Uganda

Dr. Corbin, Associate Professor, Smith College School for Social Work, will describe the experiences of children and families in the process of healing from the armed conflict in northern Uganda and her work in Ugnadan displaced person camps training local providers and encouraging use of traditional cultural practices as part of the healing process.
