The Borowsky and Open Lens Galleries continue a long tradition of exciting artistic programming at the Gershman Y. The Borowsky Gallery, now in its 15th year, is known as an art space devoted to innovative, thought-provoking shows in all media, of interest to Jewish audiences and the wider cultural community. Founded by Laurie Wagman and Irvin J. Borowsky, its stated mission is "to affirm the spiritual and communicative contributions of the arts to our private lives and public culture."
Borowsky Gallery highlights include solo exhibits by Art Spiegelman (acclaimed artist and author of Maus), noted painter Archie Rand, and French photographer Frédéric Brenner; and many group shows on themes from new landscape to touchable art. In 2003, the ambitious exhibit A Happening Place revisited the Gershman Y's history as a leading forum for Pop Art, Happenings and other pioneering art of the sixties and seventies.
The Open Lens Gallery, begun in 2000, is one of Philadelphia's few art spaces dedicated to fine-art photography. The Open Lens has hosted shows including Jonathan Elderfield's explorations of South Philadelphia, the meditative photography of Jett Sarachek, and themed shows featuring the work of Larry Fink, Sandy Sorlien, Paula Chamlee, Margaret Rutherford and many others.
We are open Sunday - Friday from 9:00am - 5:00pm, except on Jewish holidays. Please refer to our Upcoming Events for holiday hours and closings.
Admission is free.
