Did you know that our beloved group fitness instructor Melissa Klapper is also an award-winning author?  When she’s not putting us through our paces at the J, Melissa is Professor of History and Director of Women's & Gender Studies at Rowan University.  She is the author of Jewish Girls Coming of Age in America, 1860-1920 (NYU, 2005); Small Strangers: The Experiences of Immigrant Children in the United States, 1880-1925 (Ivan R. Dee, 2007); and Ballots, Babies, and Banners of Peace:  American Jewish Women's Activism, 1890-1940 (NYU, 2013), which won the National Jewish Book Award in Women's Studies.

Her most recent book, Ballet Class: An American History (Oxford, 2020), charts ballet's rise to prominence among America's most cherished childhood traditions.  Drawing on a wide variety of materials, including children's books, memoirs by professional dancers and choreographers, pedagogy manuals, and dance periodicals, in addition to archival collections and oral histories, this pathbreaking study provides a deeply-researched national perspective on the history and significance of recreational ballet class in the United States and its influence on many facets of children's lives, including gender norms, consumerism, body image, children's literature, extracurricular activities, and popular culture.

Join us for a compelling and engaging conversation with Melissa via Zoom.  A Zoom link will be sent to you prior to the event.

Event Ticket: $12 – benefits the JCC’s Sustainability Fund.  The Fund provides masks and other critical supplies for JCC staff and programs.

We’re excited to be partnering with Lynn Rosen from Open Book Productions to feature the wonderful new novel The Book of V by Anna Solomon, with a virtual visit from the author.  Anna Solomon will talk about her book and her writing process and take questions from the audience.

The Book of V is a bold, kaleidoscopic novel intertwining the lives of three women across three centuries as their stories of sex, power, and desire finally converge in the present day. The riveting stories of these three characters overlap and ultimately collide, illuminating how women’s lives have and have not changed over thousands of years.

Anna Solomon is the author of three novels—The Book of V., Leaving Lucy Pear, and The Little Bride—and a two-time winner of the Pushcart Prize. Her short fiction, essays, and reviews have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Ploughshares, One Story, The Boston Globe, Tablet, and elsewhere. Anna is the recipient of awards from MacDowell, Yaddo, Bread Loaf, the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts, and The Missouri Review, among others, and her short story “The Lobster Mafia Story” was chosen as Boston’s One City One Story read.

Event Ticket: $12
Event Ticket + a copy of the book: $36

The 100 Days of Summer Fitness Challenge is back!!

Now, more than ever, it’s critical to stay connected. During these unprecedented times, we need to exercise to help us stay strong and healthy—physically and mentally.  Go head-to-head with JCC participants across the continent in your favorite form of exercise. Whether you’re into strength training, running, group exercise, swimming, or something else, you’ll have a chance to test your mettle.

The #JCCSummerFitChallenge begins on May 31st and ends on Labor Day, September 7. Make sure you’re part of the action.  Anyone 13 years old or older can compete; each participant, however, must have a unique email address.

New family category this year!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Precor and Sal Pellegrino, for the first time,  four JCCs have the chance to win a Spinner Ride as part of the 100 Days of Summer Fitness Challenge!  One JCC in each size of center category (metro, large, intermediate, and small) will have the chance to win the bike.  Winners will be selected based upon the number of their participants and total points in top three finishes of the nine different exercise categories.

Leaders for Tomorrow (LFT) Program: Student Recruitment for 2020-2021

Today’s high school students are tomorrow’s Jewish leaders. Leaders for Tomorrow (LFT), AJC’s education and advocacy program for teens, empowers young Jews to speak up for Israel and the Jewish people. LFT helps high school students develop a strong Jewish identity and trains them as advocates for Israel, and to be voices against antisemitism. LFT gives students the tools to talk about the issues impacting world Jewry today, and the confidence to stand up for these issues in college and throughout their lives, no matter how difficult the situation.

We are currently recruiting for our third cohort of LFT students and seek your recommendations for rising sophomores and juniors. This program has been an extra-curricular highlight for students, and we look forward to your recommendations for the 2020/2021 cohort.
