Dear Friends,

"Suggestions are always welcome.  However, the deadline for complaints was last week." – Amy Krulik 🙂

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who took the time to share a suggestion for a new use for the Front Lobby.  Although I am confident that you won't ever be greeted by Elsa's Ice Palace (sorry Frozen fans) or a hot tub when you enter the J, your ideas focused on ways to bring our community together around art, music, fun activities and, of course, food.

I am delighted to share, in no particular order, the ideas from the suggestion box:

  • Smoothie stand
  • Giant game board
  • Coffee shop or stand with lattes, pastries, fresh fruit, smoothies
  • Something quiet, but food related
  • Juice/Smoothie bar
  • Water slide
  • 1980s juke box
  • A Tasty Twister pretzel stand
  • Spray park and video games
  • Foosball, pool table, ping pong table
  • Smoothie, coffee bar – after gym treats
  • More vending machines and frozen yogurt stand
  • Chalkboard wall
  • Bar called Bar Mitzvah or juice bar called Jewce
  • A combination Dunkin’ Donuts/Jamba Juice
  • A nice sunken hot tub
  • Music with food options
  • Mini café and coffee shop
  • Honey bun dispensary
  • Speakeasy
  • New café would be great
  • Elsa’s Ice Palace
  • Coffee bar with pastries and smoothies
  • Pinball machine and old video games like Pacman and Donkey Kong
  • A dunk tank rotating which staff member is getting dunked
  • Coffee and pastry vending machines
  • Coffee shop called Kayla’s Korner
  • Bar
  • Grab and go fridge case with kosher sushi, salads, wraps and pastries.  House of Kosher could deliver and stock the fridge.
  • An art exhibit with a different artist each month. Or start an art class and class artwork can be displayed in the lobby.
  • Hot tub next to a vending machine
  • Art studios
  • If you get a new food concession, get HEALTHY food, not fried!
  • Any hot food option
  • Office for Main Line Aquatics (our instructional swim partner)
  • Co-working space like WeWork
  • Kids' play area
  • Impound lot for cars that park in handicapped only spots
  • Massage chairs
  • Free, free, free vending machines
  • Bubblegum machine
  • Laundromat
  • Pop-up shop that would feature different vendors/artists
  • A new building for the JCC – people will donate for a capital campaign – tear down the old one down and build new – a fresh start for the JCC!

I will admit to being a little in love with the last idea on the list and am excited that one of the strategic priorities identified by our Strategic Planning Committee is to consider opportunities for renovating and/or rebuilding the J.  The strategic plan will help guide the JCC through the next 5 years and beyond, but, I am sure you are thinking, what does this mean for the Front Lobby right now and how much longer do I have to wait for a decent cup of coffee?

The short answer is, not too much longer.  We are refreshing some of the walls (thank you Dave!) and are talking to as many possible vendors, suppliers and retailers as possible.  There is no question that coffee is a top priority.  Although I am not a coffee drinker, I firmly support the consumption of all hot beverages and am committed to getting some kind of hot beverage dispensing system in place in the next few weeks.  And before you start worrying that my lack of coffee drinking means I don’t know anything about coffee, I have only two words to say --  La Colombe.  No promises on the exact brand, but superior coffee and tea are on their way.

Please continue to share your ideas – from the tiny to the outrageous.  The future of our JCC is bright because of your input, creativity and caring.

An early Shabbat Shalom and see you at the J,
Amy
